Adventures in Cookie-land

Image
Soooo...making cut-out cookies is an adventure at our house that I don't attempt without help (ie. Mother-in-law)!  Thank Goodness for Grandmas!  The kids enjoyed themselves, but mommy had to take DEEP BREATHS every once in a while.        Sorry I don't have pictures of the finished cookies, but they were very cute and very colorful!  Some had so many sprinkles you couldn't see the frosting!   Today I decided to make a Peppermint/White Chocolate Cookie that I was inspired to make after seeing a similar one on Pinterest.  I used my own recipe though (see end of post).  They turned out so pretty and YUMMY!  I love mint and white chocolate!  Peppermint White Chocolate Cookies 5 and 1/2 cup flour 1 tsp salt 2 tsp. baking soda  (SIFT or stir together above ingredients) 2 cups shortening 4 eggs 1 cup brown sugar 2 cups white sugar 2 tsp vanilla 1 tsp water white chocolate chips Andes Peppermint Crunch Baking Chips Beat shortening, sugar, vani

Three Cheers for Creativity

Image
I really love how creative my kids are.  It's so great that they can pretend and imagine and entertain themselves, rather than have to be entertained by things like video games, etc.  I am not saying that my kids never watch videos or play video games, but when you don't have TV, CABLE or gaming systems, they don't really have as muc h temptation!  I also am not saying that they never get "bored".  But that is usually remedied by offering to give them chores.  They quickly find something to do!  So here is an example of the creativity of our children...(Yes, I am bragging)...   Ben is using our closet to work on his "car." Just like Daddy and Grandpa Miller.  He's got his tools, his light and his Mountain Dew.  What more could he need?   Just tonight, Sam and Joanna were pretending to be a "Chinese King and Queen".  Where do they come up with this stuff?  They play so great together...hope it lasts!

Rosh Hashanah (Feast of Trumpets)

Image
A few weeks ago we celebrated Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.  It has been interesting to study the feasts of the Old Testament and learn new things.  For instance, some believe that ancient calendars record Creation as taking place the same time of year as Rosh Hashanah, thus the celebration of the "New Year" and the Birthday of the Earth.  Kind of neat to think about.  There is so much symbolism involved in the celebration.  Below is a globe with a crown on it, symbolizing that God is the King of the World   Then the round loaf symbolizing the fullness of the coming year, topped with a ladder symbolizing our prayers ascending to heaven. The honey cake (minus the icing), is a birthday cake for the earth!   We also celebrated by blowing a shofar.  We were supposed to do it each morning starting on Rosh Hashanah for ten days, the High Holy Days(or days of repentance), culminating in Yom Kippur(Day of Atonement).  Each time we blew it we were

Birthday Girl's Nite

Image
For JoJo's birthday, all the "Miller" ladies went out for supper at Olive Garden and shopping... We don't do this very often, so we enjoyed ourselves!   JoJo and Kaelin posing with her new backpack from Aunt Jenn...So cute!  Oh, and one male came to dinner...Grady!  I think he was getting tired of our ceaseless chatter...Poor guy.  His daddy rescued him for the rest of the evening.  Avery is playing peek-a-boo...sweetie-pie....  She's cracking herself up!  Not sure how I missed getting a picture of Aunt Jessica and myself, but here is the shirt Jessica bought Jojo while we were shopping, and behind her is the tent she picked out.  Fun, fun, birthday stuff!

Craft Nite

Image
So, we know we are old if we are having a "Craft Nite", right?  Haha!  I just can't quite imagine myself doing this in my single days!  Now we just crave some quiet sit-down time with friends of the adult kind! We had fun making Coasters and Headbands while our hubbies were playing Wallyball.  What is Wallyball, you say? Find out here or here .   The link for the tutorial for the Coasters we made is found here .  What fun...they turned out really nice!  Might make good gifts...hmmm  We also made headbands...the tutorial is here .  As you can see, we weren't all that quiet, but it was relaxing!  Thanks gals for a fun nite!
